Intelsat’s partnership with the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative will deliver high-speed internet connectivity to 10 education centers across South Sudan and Uganda, addressing digital inequality in conflict-affected regions.
The three-year collaboration targets 7 centers in South Sudan and 3 in Uganda, providing satellite-powered connectivity where traditional infrastructure remains inadequate. This initiative could reach over 50,000 young people in areas where internet usage remains below 19% according to International Telecommunication Union data.
Forest Whitaker’s nonprofit organization operates Community Learning Centers focusing on conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and community development. The satellite connectivity will enable access to digital resources, online courses, and virtual exchange programs previously impossible in remote locations.
CEO Dave Wajsgras emphasized Intelsat’s commitment to closing digital divides across developing economies. “Satellite communications can transform educational opportunities in regions where terrestrial infrastructure faces significant challenges,” Wajsgras stated.
The economic impact extends beyond education, as graduates from WPDI programs often become community leaders, educators, and advocates. Success stories include former participants who now serve as elected officials and media personalities, contributing to local economic development.
Digital literacy training integrated into the program will prepare students for technology-driven economic opportunities. South Sudan and Uganda’s youthful demographics make digital skills particularly valuable for future workforce development.
The initiative addresses critical infrastructure gaps that have limited economic growth in both countries. Reliable internet access supports e-commerce development, digital banking services, and remote work opportunities that could generate significant income for local communities.
Intelsat will provide equipment, managed connectivity services, installation, and ongoing technical support throughout the partnership period. This comprehensive approach ensures sustainable operations beyond the initial implementation phase.
