Lagos Blue Economy Model Attracts Federal Study

The Federal Government has commenced a comprehensive study of Lagos State’s Blue Economy initiatives, seeking to replicate successful coastal development strategies across Nigeria’s 853-kilometer coastline.

The study tour, conducted by participants from the Senior Executive Course 57 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, focuses on Lagos’ innovative approach to harnessing marine resources for economic development. The four-day assessment examines infrastructure projects, policy frameworks, and sustainable development models that have positioned Lagos as a regional maritime hub.

Lagos State Government Secretary Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin highlighted the state’s strategic advantages, including over 180 kilometers of coastline, vast lagoons, and a population exceeding 25 million people dependent on water-based resources for commerce and livelihood.

“Under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES PLUS Agenda, we have taken bold and practical steps to harness the potential of the Blue Economy in a manner that is inclusive, innovative, and sustainable,” Salu-Hundeyin stated during the study tour opening ceremony.

The Lekki Deep Sea Port, inaugurated in 2023, represents a cornerstone achievement in Lagos’ Blue Economy strategy. As West Africa’s most advanced deep-sea port, the facility has eased Apapa congestion, attracted international maritime trade, and positioned Lagos as a regional logistics hub with significant employment generation potential.

Lagos State Waterways Authority’s expanded ferry services have created alternative transportation networks, reducing traffic congestion while supporting the state’s carbon reduction goals. The ‘Omi-Eko’ ferry service connects multiple communities daily, demonstrating practical applications of sustainable water transportation.

The state’s investment in shoreline defense projects, particularly in erosion-prone areas like Lekki and Badagry, addresses climate change challenges while protecting valuable coastal assets. These initiatives complement marine and coastal tourism promotion efforts that create opportunities for local entrepreneurship.

“Lagos State is committed to Waterway Sanitation and Marine Waste Management, as we constantly clean up our waterways to reduce pollution, and promote environmental sustainability,” the SSG emphasized.

The study tour’s findings will inform national policy recommendations for expanding Nigeria’s Blue Economy potential, with particular focus on regulatory harmonization, funding mechanisms, and capacity development across coastal states.
