President John Mahama has labeled illegal mining a national emergency due to its destructive impact on forests and rivers.
During his “Thank You Tour” in the Western North Region, he decried the devastation in Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso. He blamed illegal mining for polluting water bodies and degrading forest reserves. The President pledged stronger action by the national taskforce to halt the crisis. He also condemned individuals using anti-galamsey operations to extort money. Licensed small-scale miners, he noted, are being harassed by fake taskforces. Mahama called for the arrest and prosecution of these extortionists. He stressed the need for urgent and honest efforts to protect the environment.
