Ghana Pushes Blue Economy Strategy

Ghana is drafting its first-ever Blue Economy Strategy to manage marine and coastal resources sustainably. Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said oceans are vital for prosperity and must be protected for future generations. She called for a balance between economic growth, environmental care, and cultural preservation.

Over 260 participants from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector joined a three-day consultation in Accra. Fisheries Minister Emilia Arthur described the strategy as a national vision with potential for jobs, food security, and innovation. A 16-member expert committee, backed by the African Union and other partners, prepared the draft framework.

The plan aligns with global goals on climate action, ocean life, and decent work. Next steps include forming a Blue Economy Commission, a Stakeholder Forum, and new legislation for Parliament.
