The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG) has warned that smuggling is draining billions from the economy. The group says criminal networks are thriving while genuine businesses suffer from high taxes and operating costs.
Goods such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, alcohol, and textiles are being smuggled into the country in huge volumes. FABAG says this illegal trade is destroying local industries and depriving the government of vital tax revenue. It warns that the losses are weakening the cedi, killing jobs, and discouraging investment. The association is urging Customs, the Trade Ministry, and security agencies to strengthen border controls.
FABAG also wants the Finance Ministry to review high import taxes that drive smuggling. It says the issue has become a national security threat that demands urgent government action.
