Togo’s Cereal Output Slightly Declines After Five-Year Growth

Togo’s cereal production reached 1.53 million tons for the 2024–2025 season, slightly down from 1.56 million tons the previous year. The decline ends five years of steady growth that saw production rise from 1.26 million tons in 2019.

Maize remains the country’s top cereal, followed by rice, millet, and sorghum, mainly for local consumption. The BCEAO attributed the trend to changing weather and rising input costs. Government efforts to modernize farming have improved access to fertilizers and quality seeds. For the 2025–2026 season, authorities plan to supply 85,000 tons of fertilizer, up from 78,000 last year.

About 40% of this support will go to the Savanes region, which has high agricultural needs. The plan also includes distributing improved seeds to boost smallholder productivity and strengthen food security.
