Ghana Targets 300,000 Tonnes Tomatoes

Ghana aims to produce between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes in the next two to three years, focusing on the dry season. Deputy Food and Agriculture Minister John Dumelo announced the plan on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on 18 February 2026.

He said the move is part of efforts to reduce imports and strengthen local production. Ghana’s annual tomato demand is about 800,000 metric tonnes, leaving a significant supply gap. Trials with different tomato varieties are ongoing at irrigation schemes such as Komadan in the Ashanti Region and the Tono Dam in the north. The government is also supporting farmers with solar-powered boreholes and water pumps to boost dry season farming.

Mr Dumelo said the immediate target is to cut imports by 20 to 30 percent within two years. He expressed confidence that with sustained research and expansion, Ghana could stop tomato imports from Burkina Faso and other neighbouring countries within five to six years.
