Abidjan District Suspends Ban on Motorbikes and Tricycles

The District of Abidjan has suspended its recently announced ban on motorbikes and tricycles on several major roads. A new statement signed by Communications Director Nicolas Baba Coulibaly urged users to behave responsibly and obey traffic rules.

The suspension comes a day after the district had issued a directive restricting two- and three-wheelers from major boulevards and bridges across Abidjan. Authorities had justified the earlier ban as part of a 2021 government policy aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidents. The announcement triggered strong public backlash, with concerns raised about how people with reduced mobility using tricycles would move around. The U-turn now allows many motorbike and tricycle riders to resume work, especially those operating in public and private transport.

Officials emphasised that safety regulations remain in force despite the suspension. The district called for responsible use of the roads to ensure safer mobility for all.
