Afenyo-Markin Calls for Ghanaian Languages in International Schools

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged international schools in Ghana to teach local languages to promote cultural pride. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said he first raised the issue in Parliament in 2018 but it was ignored.

He believes adding Ghanaian languages like Twi, Ga, Ewe, or Dagbani to school curricula will enhance the country’s image. According to him, this will help expatriate children connect with Ghana’s culture during their stay. Afenyo-Markin said such efforts would also help sell Ghana positively on the international stage. He encouraged the Tourism Ministry to support the initiative as part of national branding.

The Effutu MP added that cultural promotion can attract investors and create jobs. His remarks follow a new directive by the Education Minister for schools to use mother tongues in teaching.
