So far this year, jihadist attacks in northern Togo have killed 54 civilians and 8 soldiers.
The Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, said 15 attacks were carried out by a group linked to Al Qaeda. This group, JNIM, operates across the Sahel region of West Africa. Togo is among several coastal countries now facing increased jihadist violence. May and June saw a major rise in deadly attacks across the Sahel.
The violence started in Mali in 2012 and has spread into Niger and Burkina Faso. Around 8,000 Togolese soldiers are now stationed in the north near Burkina Faso. Thousands have died and millions have fled due to ongoing conflict in the region.
