Environmental authorities in Lomé are holding a workshop to finalize a national plan for managing plastic waste. The event, which began on November 4, 2025, aims to reduce the country’s growing plastic pollution problem. Officials report that over two million plastic bags are discarded daily, with very little recycling taking place. This has led to severe soil and water pollution, endangering public health. Environmental expert Meba Toyi says new legal measures are needed to match the actual scale of waste production. The plan includes gathering data on plastic use and landfill disposal to guide future policy decisions. Since 2011, Togo has launched several projects, supported by the United Nations, to improve waste management. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to promoting a circular economy and protecting the environment.
