Ivory Coast has strengthened security along its northern borders due to an unusual influx of Malian refugees. The government links the migration to attacks by the jihadist group JNIM in southern Mali.
The National Security Council has ordered border reinforcement and directed that arriving refugees be registered. The Chief of the General Staff of the Ivorian Armed Forces is overseeing the deployment of additional personnel. Authorities aim to prevent the infiltration of armed elements while managing humanitarian needs. The move comes ahead of legislative elections scheduled for 27 December 2025.
The council plans to deploy 44,000 security personnel during the elections and restrict unauthorized political gatherings. Analysts warn that the refugee influx could strain local resources and heighten social tension if not managed carefully.
