Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has warned that teachers who sexually abuse female students will face severe punishment. Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize in Ho, she said such misconduct is a betrayal of trust and damages the teaching profession.
She stressed that transfers will no longer be used as punishment for offenders. Her remarks come after two recent cases of alleged sexual misconduct by teachers at KNUST SHS and Okadjakrom SHTS. The Ghana Education Service called the incidents unethical and unacceptable. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also announced plans to revive Parent Teacher Associations to boost community monitoring in schools.
She praised teacher unions and the National Teaching Council for promoting professionalism and discipline. GNAT President Rev. Isaac Owusu also condemned the misconduct, urging teachers to protect, not harm, their students.
