The Ghana Card will become mandatory for insurance transactions from January 1, 2026. The directive was announced by the National Insurance Commission.
Customers must present a valid Ghana Card to buy or renew motor and other insurance policies. Corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number for motor insurance. The Commission said the move will improve claims processing across the sector. It is also intended to strengthen Know Your Customer and anti-money laundering controls.
The policy is expected to help reduce insurance fraud nationwide. The move aligns the insurance industry with similar Ghana Card rules in the banking sector.
