Ghana, Nigeria Discuss Power-for-Gas Deal

Energy Minister John Jinapor says Ghana is negotiating a barter deal with Nigeria to exchange electricity for gas. He revealed the plan at the Future Energy Conference organized by ACEP.

Under the proposal, Ghana would import gas from Nigeria, generate power, and return electricity. Mr. Jinapor said the initiative would boost regional energy security and integration. He noted that Ghana already supplies power to Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin.

The minister also confirmed that Ghana’s nuclear energy program is still being pursued. He stressed that nuclear power will help secure a stable energy base for the subregion. The conference focused on financing Africa’s energy future and closing the energy access gap.
