Ghana Parliament Approves $2.8bn Debt Relief Deal

Ghana’s Parliament approved a historic $2.8 billion debt relief agreement with 25 creditor nations. The deal aims to restore macroeconomic stability and open access to new IMF and World Bank funding. Finance Minister praised the plan as a “reset” for the nation’s economy. Economists, however, warned that structural reforms are needed for long-term impact. Citizens hope the agreement leads to lower inflation and job creation.

Elsewhere, the UK launched a new premium visa centre in Kumasi. This is expected to ease travel for Ghanaians and boost bilateral relations. Meanwhile, PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebrations were flagged off in Cape Coast. Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie urged Africans to “reconnect with heritage and identity.” A Ghanaian doctor also won a prestigious Johns Hopkins award for public health work.
