The government will begin distributing birds under the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ poultry programme from mid-November. Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, says the initiative will supply about three million birds to farmers nationwide.
Each constituency is expected to receive around 10,000 birds, with selected households getting about 50 each. The birds will come with feed and vaccination to help farmers start immediately. Mr Dumelo says the plan aims to boost local poultry production and reduce chicken imports that cost Ghana over $300 million yearly. He assured that the process will be transparent and benefit people with basic poultry knowledge.
The programme also seeks to create jobs, support rural youth and women, and stabilise food prices. According to the Deputy Minister, this is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen food security under the Feed Ghana initiative.
