Ghana’s Public Debt Falls by GH¢156 Billion in Three Months

Ghana’s total public debt dropped sharply to GH¢613 billion in June 2025. This is a decrease of GH¢156.4 billion from March’s GH¢769.4 billion level.

The current debt now represents 43.8% of the country’s GDP. In US dollars, the debt rose to $59.4 billion, up from $49.5 billion. External debt in June stood at $29.1 billion, making up 29.1% of GDP. Domestic debt fell slightly to GH¢312.7 billion in June, from GH¢315.6 billion in May.

The Bank of Ghana attributes part of the drop to the cedi’s appreciation. Ghana recorded a 1.1% fiscal deficit and a 0.7% primary surplus in June 2025.
