GRA targets VAT defaulters

The Ghana Revenue Authority is intensifying enforcement of the new VAT system that began on January 1, 2026. It says about 60 percent of businesses are not complying with the reformed VAT law. Some businesses collect VAT from customers but fail to pay it to the state. This non-compliance is causing significant revenue losses for the government. To address this, the GRA has formed a new Compliance and Enforcement Unit.

The unit operates under the Domestic Tax Revenue Division. Commissioner General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong says stronger enforcement will boost revenue. The 26-member team is expected to close the VAT collection gap before year-end.
