Smugglers Control Ghana’s Rice and Sugar Market

Importers say smugglers have taken over Ghana’s rice and sugar market. They blame weak government enforcement and long delays at the borders. The Food and Beverages Association of Ghana reports massive smuggling through Aflao and Elubo. Legal importers say they are being pushed out of business by cheaper, illegal goods. The State is said to be losing millions of cedis in revenue.

FABAG calls the problem “economic sabotage” and wants a national anti-smuggling task force. It also demands digital border monitoring and cooperation among security agencies. The Association warns that continued inaction will destroy formal trade and harm local producers.
