Togo and Benin are preparing a joint water charter for the Mono Basin. Experts from both countries met in Lomé on September 24, 2025, to review a provisional guide.
The workshop aims to create a common framework for sustainable water management. The Mono River covers 24,300 km² and serves millions of people along the shared border. Officials warn that without fair use, the resource could become a source of conflict. The planned charter will include rules on fairness, information sharing, and prior project notification.
It will also encourage ecosystem protection and help communities adapt to climate change. The basin, home to nearly 4 million people, spans 21,300 km² in Togo and 3,000 km² in Benin.
