Togo has adopted a new Harmonized Consumer Price Index (HCPI) to better reflect shifting consumption patterns. Food remains dominant but fell from 32.8% in 2014 to 27.9% in 2023, showing households are spending more on other needs.
Services, especially restaurants and accommodation, rose from 14.9% to 16.5%, driven by urbanization and digital deliveries. Communication expenses grew sharply from 5.9% to 8.1%, now outweighing education. Health care climbed from 3.7% to 5.7%, highlighting rising demand and better access to services. Transport jumped from 9.4% to 12.1%, with fuel costs and ride-hailing services pushing prices higher.
Housing, water, and energy declined in weight from 12% to 8.3%, not due to cheaper bills but to shifting priorities. The index shows a society in transition—less centered on food, more urban, connected, and service-oriented.
