US Eyes Togo Port to Boost Trade

The US wants to increase economic ties with Togo through the Port of Lomé. On July 21, 2025, US diplomat Richard Michaels visited the port to assess trade potential. He praised the port’s modern equipment and deepwater capacity. Michaels said the port offers US firms better access to African markets. Togo’s exports to the US rose to $97 million in 2024, up from $20 million in 2021.

Meanwhile, US exports to Togo reached $283.59 million the same year. However, new US tariffs of 10% on African imports are creating concern. Togo fears these taxes may hurt key exports like cocoa, soy, and clothing.
