Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the Acting Chief Justice nominee, says lawyers must have a certificate from the General Legal Council (GLC) to be in good standing. He made the comment when the Ghana Law Society visited him in Accra.
He explained that courts have followed this rule since the Tawuraja v. Attorney-General case. Currently, the Ghana Law Society and others are in court challenging the Ghana Bar Association’s role as the only lawyers’ group. They want more than one professional body to be allowed.
Some people think the nominee’s comments may show bias. Others say he was only repeating what the law already requires.
