JoyNews has uncovered severe pollution of the Rivers Bisi and Subri, tributaries of the Tano River. This comes despite earlier denials by the Tano North Municipal Chief Executive, Pious Opoku.
The MCE had led chiefs upstream, insisting no mining was taking place in the area. However, JoyNews cameras later captured Chinese miners and their Ghanaian partners at work. The illegal operations, known as galamsey, are happening directly along the River Bisi. Residents, mostly farmers, say the pollution has robbed them of clean water for farming and drinking.
They warn that their livelihoods and health are under serious threat. The activities also breach the government’s buffer zone policy and its recent declaration of rivers and forests as security zones.
