UNESCO Adds Malawi’s Mount Mulanje to Heritage List

Malawi’s Mount Mulanje has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its cultural and natural significance. The mountain is home to ancient tea plantations developed by Scottish settlers in the early 20th century. UNESCO praised the region for preserving traditional agricultural methods and unique biodiversity. It is now among five African locations recently added to the heritage list. The designation is expected to boost eco-tourism and international funding for conservation.

Local communities welcomed the news with celebrations, calling it a “victory for heritage and nature.” Officials say this could transform the region’s economy through increased tourist activity. Mount Mulanje is already popular with hikers and researchers due to its endemic flora. The government plans to invest in sustainable tourism infrastructure and protection zones. UNESCO will also provide technical assistance to support long-term management efforts.
