Community Support Strengthens Angola’s Cholera Response – WHO

On June 20, 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) hailed the critical role of community engagement in Angola’s ongoing battle against a severe cholera outbreak. With over 21,000 reported cases and nearly 700 deaths this year, cholera has spread to 18 of Angola’s 21 provinces, placing immense pressure on the health system. WHO, in collaboration with UNICEF and local authorities, has launched a €1 million EU-funded initiative to scale up life-saving interventions in the worst-hit areas.

The joint response focuses on community-based efforts such as oral rehydration points, hygiene promotion, improved access to safe water, and cholera treatment centres. Volunteers and health workers are being trained to deliver swift care and raise awareness at the grassroots level. WHO officials stress that empowering communities is essential to reducing the outbreak’s toll and building long-term resilience against future epidemics.
