9th Pan-African Congress Opens in Lomé

Lomé has begun hosting the 9th Pan-African Congress, which opened on December 8, 2025. The event is jointly organized by the Togolese government and the African Union.

President Faure Gnassingbé launched the proceedings before African and Afro-descendant delegations. Nearly a thousand participants—including ministers, diplomats, academics and diaspora leaders—are attending. Discussions revolve around renewing Pan-Africanism and Africa’s role in reforming global institutions. Foreign Minister Robert Dussey says the forum will tackle issues of African sovereignty and global governance.

In his address, President Gnassingbé urged a collective awakening and described the congress as a reconquest, not a commemoration.Togo views the gathering as part of efforts to rebuild ties among African and Afro-descendant peoples for a modern, forward-looking Pan-Africanism.
