Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC has won the Akwatia by-election with 18,199 votes, about 54%. He defeated Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, who secured 15,235 votes, and Owusu Patrick of the LPG, who got 82 votes.
This victory marks the NDC’s reclaiming of a key swing seat previously held by the NPP. Baidoo had earlier survived a tough NDC primary against Erasmus Koney Ali and former MP Henry Yiadom Boakye. In 2024, the late Ernest Yaw Kumi of the NPP had won the seat with 19,269 votes against Boakye’s 17,206. Election day saw some drama when police arrested a man accused of tearing down campaign posters.
A confrontation also broke out at Akwatia lorry station between NPP’s Alhaji Osman Masawudu and NDC’s Chief Sofo Azorka’s escort. Police swiftly intervened in both incidents to restore calm and ensure voting continued smoothly.
