The Court of Appeal has acquitted William Baah, the former Denkyira Obuasi assemblyman jailed for abetting the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama. A three-member panel ruled that the trial judge wrongly directed the jury to convict him.
The Court said the prosecution’s evidence was unreliable and could not prove Baah’s guilt. It found inconsistencies in witness statements and said there were no eyewitnesses linking him to abetment. The judges described the trial court’s misdirection as serious and set aside his life sentence. They condemned the lynching of Major Mahama and called for stronger public education against mob justice.
Baah broke down in tears after hearing the ruling but was returned to custody for release procedures. Eleven others convicted of murder and conspiracy in the case remain serving life sentences.
