Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee has backed two major agreements worth about €178 million to upgrade the Ghana Air Force fleet. The package includes one Falcon 6X jet and four Airbus helicopters to replace ageing aircraft that are expensive to maintain.
The Minority sharply criticised the move and asked the government to explain why it rejected similar proposals for years. A $60.7 million deal will see the Ghana Air Force acquire a long-range Falcon 6X for troop movement, logistics, and VVIP travel. A €126 million agreement with Airbus will supply one H160 and three H175 helicopters for rescue, surveillance, and disaster response. Government says the new aircraft are essential because the current fleet limits operational readiness.
Deliveries will begin in 2026 and continue over four years, according to the Finance Minister. Despite political debate, the acquisition is expected to enhance surveillance, defence capacity, and emergency response operations.
