Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has released damning findings from an internal review, implicating Ethiopian government forces in the execution of three of its humanitarian workers in June 2021, during the height of the Tigray conflict. The victims—Spanish national María Hernández and Ethiopian colleagues Yohannes Halefom Reda and Tedros Gebremariam—were traveling in a clearly marked MSF vehicle near Abi Adi when they were intercepted and allegedly shot at close range. According to MSF, witness testimony, including that of a soldier, indicates the killings were deliberate and ordered by Ethiopian military commanders.
Despite repeated calls from MSF and international humanitarian bodies, Ethiopian authorities have yet to conduct or publish a transparent investigation into the incident. The lack of accountability has renewed global scrutiny of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership and raised grave concerns about the safety of aid workers in Ethiopia. In response, MSF has suspended operations in parts of Tigray, citing ongoing security threats and the failure of authorities to ensure humanitarian protection.
