Political Scientist Blames Poor Leadership for Water Crisis

A UDS political scientist, Dr. Alidu Bukari Gbensuglo, says Ghana’s worsening water crisis is caused by recklessness, poor leadership, and greed. He linked the rising cost of water treatment to years of neglect and illegal mining.

Dr. Gbensuglo described the pollution of rivers by galamsey as a self-inflicted wound draining national resources. His comments followed warnings from Ghana Water Limited’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu. Mr. Mutawakilu revealed that GWL needs GH₵300 million to clear silted water sources feeding treatment plants. He cautioned that continued galamsey could soon cripple water production nationwide.

Dr. Gbensuglo urged both government and citizens to work together to end illegal mining. He warned that without accountability and value change, Ghana will keep repeating the same costly mistakes.
