Togo Begins Transition After Municipal Elections

Togo is managing a transition in its local governments after the July 17, 2025 municipal elections. The government shared new guidelines on July 23 through Minister Awaté Hodabalo. Outgoing mayors must follow approved budgets and avoid unnecessary spending. They are also barred from starting new projects beyond daily operations. Municipal teams must settle any pending financial and administrative issues. The goal is a smooth and transparent handover to the new officials.

The move supports Togo’s decentralization efforts started in 2019. Provisional election results are out, but final results await the Supreme Court’s confirmation.
