Nigeria Hosts African Youth Athletics in Abeokuta

Nigeria is currently hosting the third African U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, drawing athletes from 43 countries. Over 900 young competitors are taking part, including top teams from Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa. The event is a major showcase for emerging talent across track and field disciplines. Nigerian officials hope it will boost local interest in athletics and enhance the country’s sporting infrastructure. The competition runs from 16–20 July.

Opening day saw strong performances in sprint events and middle-distance heats. Local fans turned out in large numbers to support their home athletes. Talent scouts from international leagues and universities are also present. The Nigerian Athletics Federation praised the organization and athlete turnout. Officials plan to use this event to secure future bids for continental and global youth competitions.
