Togo has been invited to join Niger’s Salkadamna coal project, alongside Burkina Faso and Mali. The initiative aims to exploit 69 million tonnes of coal reserves in Niger to boost regional energy independence. It includes building a 5,200 MW thermal power plant, an open-pit mine, transmission lines, and a coal briquette plant. Togo’s government welcomed the idea, seeing it as a step toward universal electricity access by 2030.
Joining could reduce Togo’s reliance on costly imported oil for power generation. It would also diversify the energy mix and improve energy security in the face of global price volatility. A 600 MW pilot phase is already underway in Niger. The project is led by Niger’s WANDA GROUP with Chinese and Indian partners.
