USDA Sees Ghana Rice Output Rising but Risks Remain

The USDA forecasts Ghana’s 2025/2026 rice output at 900,000 metric tons, an 18% increase from last year. The growth is linked to favorable weather and more farmer participation.

However, Ghana’s Meteorological Agency has warned of drier conditions that could threaten yields. Rice prices have been volatile, jumping from GH¢200 to GH¢650 per 100kg bag between March 2024 and January 2025. Though prices fell to GH¢400 by March 2025, they remain double last year’s levels. Consumption is expected to reach 1.80 million MT, with imports covering over half the demand.

Asian suppliers dominate, with Vietnam, India, and Thailand leading the market. The USDA warns Ghana’s rice sector faces weak irrigation, low mechanization, and poor processing capacity.
