VRA Plans Battery Future for Akosombo Dam

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is exploring plans to turn the Akosombo Dam into a giant power battery. The project, still at the feasibility stage, is meant to modernise Ghana’s energy system.

VRA’s acting CEO, Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, told Parliament’s Energy Committee about the idea. He explained that the dam could store renewable energy during the day and release it at night. This would make solar power more reliable and reduce costs. Obeng-Kenzo said Akosombo and Akuse dams are in good condition after retrofitting and global assessments.

Experts have extended Akosombo’s lifespan by 40 years and Akuse’s by 30 years. The Energy Committee is touring key power agencies and will end with visits to Akosombo, Akuse, and Bui dams.
