Togo’s Digital Minister, Cina Lawson, outlined the country’s AI priorities at a regional summit in Cotonou. She said Togo plans to introduce an AI agent in schools to help prepare students for the future.
The idea builds on ongoing projects to extend fibre-optic coverage and bring broadband to schools and health centres. Lawson noted that West African countries must work together to build shared AI data centres because no country can fund one alone. She added that Togo is digitising all ministries, which will create large amounts of data. Clear rules will be needed to manage how this data is used and shared.
She also stressed that West Africa still lacks common standards for data sharing. The summit ended with the Cotonou Declaration, which supports regional cooperation on AI and digital services.
