A new report says cheating in the 2025 WASSCE dropped sharply because WAEC used much stricter supervision. Africa Education Watch boss, Kofi Asare, said tougher checks prevented students from getting grades they did not truly earn.
WAEC cancelled the results of 6,295 candidates who brought unauthorised materials into the exam hall. Investigations are still ongoing into 1,066 more suspected cases of malpractice. Another 908 students had some subject results withheld, while 158 had their entire results held. Core Mathematics performance fell sharply, with passes dropping from over 305,000 in 2024 to about 209,000 in 2025.
Only 48.73% passed Core Maths this year, making it the hardest-hit subject. Eduwatch said its monitors saw very high vigilance, and new warnings that teachers involved in malpractice could be dismissed also helped reduce cheating.
