ECOWAS ministers have unanimously endorsed President John Mahama as West Africa’s candidate for the 2027 AU chairmanship. The decision was made during their meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister announced the endorsement publicly on Friday. ECOWAS heads of state are expected to formally approve it this Sunday. Ghana has thanked the regional bloc for its confidence in Mahama. The AU leadership includes both a rotating political chair and a commission chair.
Candidates for the AU Commission Chair undergo a rigorous vetting and nomination process. The final selection is made by the AU Assembly through a secret ballot requiring a two-thirds majority.
