Two Togolese researchers are promoting aquaponics as a solution to climate-related farming challenges. The initiative, led by Dr. Ahama Kplolali and Kokoevi Agbevenou-Dovi, combines fish farming with vegetable production.
The idea emerged after drought destroyed tomato farms in Noepe in 2020. After three years of research, the team built a working prototype in Lomé in 2023. The system allows year-round food production with significant water savings. Their project gained international attention at the 2025 Blue Invest Forum in Lomé.
The researchers now plan a 3,000 square metre commercial farm in the capital. However, funding, land access and regulation remain major challenges.
