The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East by-election. The Electoral Commission announced the results on Tuesday evening after voting ended.
Supporters celebrated across the constituency following the official declaration. The by-election was organised to fill the vacancy left by the late MP, Naser Toure Mahama, who died in January. Four other candidates, including representatives from the NPP and LPG as well as two independents, contested the seat. Early projections had indicated a strong lead for Baba Jamal, which was confirmed by the final results.
Turnout was low in the early hours, with observers linking it partly to Ramadan fasting. The Ghana Police Service maintained a strong security presence, describing the election as calm and orderly throughout the day.
