The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has warned importers and exporters in Ghana about possible increases in shipping costs. This follows disruptions to global shipping caused by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The tensions have affected vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global trade route. Many shipping companies are avoiding the area because of security concerns. Some ships are now taking longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope.
This change increases travel distance, fuel use, and operating costs. Shipping lines have therefore introduced war-risk and emergency surcharges. The GSA says these developments could lead to higher freight costs, delays, and supply disruptions for goods coming into Ghana.
