Algeria Marks 1945 Massacre Anniversary

Algeria has marked the 81st anniversary of the 1945 massacres carried out by French colonial forces.
An estimated 45,000 Algerians were reportedly killed in Sétif, Guelma and Khérata.
The killings followed demonstrations demanding independence after World War Two.
France had recruited Algerians to fight against Nazi Germany during the war.
Commemorations were held in the northeastern city of Sétif.

French Minister Delegate Alice Rufo attended the ceremony alongside Algerian officials.
France said the visit reflects efforts to rebuild trust between both countries.
Relations have remained strained following diplomatic disputes in recent years.
Historical reports say the massacres continued for more than 40 days.
Victims were reportedly executed, burned alive and thrown into ravines.
