Migrant rights activists and civil society groups have raised concerns over Europe’s expanding border controls in Africa. They say European migration enforcement is increasingly being transferred to African and other transit countries.
Participants at the World Social Forum in Cotonou called for greater international coordination against the externalisation of borders. Activists say poorer countries are being encouraged to assume greater responsibility for migrants through financial and diplomatic incentives.
