The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has asked for a 280% increase in water tariffs. It blames illegal mining and pollution for raising treatment costs. The company says it now uses much more alum and lime to clean dirty water. Frequent silt and sludge are also damaging its machines. GWCL compared its tariffs to market prices, showing water is sold far higher in sachets and bottles.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is also asking for a 225% increase in charges. ECG says this is needed to prevent collapse and improve power supply. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) will decide on the proposals for 2025–2030.
