Mahama to Present Slave Trade Resolution at UN

John Dramani Mahama will present a historic resolution to the United Nations General Assembly in March. The resolution seeks global recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

He made the announcement during the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union. The AU has already adopted the draft resolution ahead of its presentation at the UN. Mahama, serving as the AU Champion for Reparations, said the legal and moral case for justice is strong. The resolution builds on efforts begun at the UN’s 80th Session in September 2025.

The AU has also set up special committees and expert groups to advance reparatory justice. The March presentation is expected to mark a major step in Africa’s push for recognition and redress of historical injustices.
