Mahama Presses for Reparations for Africa

President John Mahama has renewed Africa’s call for reparative justice at the Diaspora Summit 2025. He said the continent has reached a pivotal moment and cannot pretend the past never happened.

Mahama warned against efforts to erase memories of slavery, colonialism, and the struggle for freedom. He said ongoing racism and discrimination make it impossible for Africa to forget its history. The President stressed that this is a time to speak clearly and reclaim what was lost. He announced that Ghana will move a UN motion to recognise the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

Mahama said reparations must include debt cancellation, cash compensation, and the return of stolen artefacts. He ended by urging unity between Africa and the diaspora, saying the future belongs to Africans.
