Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior has extended the national Gun Amnesty Programme to 30 January 2026. The initiative was originally expected to end on 15 January but was prolonged due to strong public response.
Officials said the extension will allow more education and community engagement across the country. Individuals who earlier declared their firearms can now complete the registration process. The ministry warned that strict enforcement will begin immediately after the new deadline. Unregistered firearm holders will face detection and prosecution once the amnesty ends.
Government officials say the programme is meant to reduce gun violence and improve public safety. Community leaders and civil society groups are being encouraged to help ensure full compliance.
